A Baxter man arrested in Newton last weekend for fleeing from a traffic stop, bonded out of jail yesterday (Wednesday). Court records show 29 year old Dustin Ray Bestell was released on a 2-thousand 250-dollar bond, with a court appearance set for next Wednesday, March 30th. Newton Police arrested Bestell for Eluding, Interference with Official Acts, Reckless Driving, Driving with a Suspended License, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Shortly after 11:30 Saturday night…an officer reportedly saw a westbound 2000 Ford Mustang driven by Bestell accelerate through a yellow light on 1st Avenue East at Iowa Speedway Drive. The officer initiated a traffic stop. But Bestell kept on driving. The police report says the Baxter man weaved through a residential neighborhood for about 4 minutes before driving into a backyard and crashing into a house. Bestell then fled on foot, with the officer in pursuit. The officer lost sight of the suspect. But later, a resident of the neighborhood spotted Bestell on his property…and he was taken into custody there. Police say the 29 year old’s driver’s license is suspended for non payment of fines, and a glass drug pipe was found in the seat of the squad car where he was sitting.
