22News Storm Team Meteorologist Chris Bouzakis has a look at how to protect your plants and when we typically see the last frost.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Temperatures are forecasted to be below freezing Wednesday night, which could damage your plants if you don’t protect them.

22News Storm Team Forecast Discussion

Frost is expected for many Wednesday night as temperatures will be falling into the 20s across western Massachusetts. The date for the last frost varies depending on where you live.

The typical dates for the last frost to occur are:

Chicopee: May 9th

Amherst: May 8th

North Adams: May 13th

Greenfield: May 14th

With temperatures below freezing, this can hurt your plants. To protect your plants, bring potted plants indoors if you can. If the pots are too heavy or the plants are in the ground, cover the plants with a light blanket or cloth.

Putting down extra soil/mulch around your plant can help as that will keep the heat in the ground longer.

Something many probably never think of or know about is to water your plants during the day before a frost is expected at night. The water can help absorb heat during the day into the ground and protect the plants’ roots.
