SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Card skimming devices were placed in some grocery stores in Massachusetts earlier this year and thieves could still be out there trying to scam people.

Why Massachusetts EBT cards are vulnerable to theft

To prevent that from happening, it all comes down to knowing how to check for these skimming devices and using other payment methods.

“These thieves are coming up with more creative technology to steal your information so nothing is 100 percent full proof but you can protect yourself,” said Ryan Walsh, Spokesperson for the Springfield Police Department.

Thieves across western Massachusetts are installing card skimming devices on ATMs, POS systems in grocery stores and even at gas stations. When customers go to swipe their credit or debit cards using the card reader, these devices can scan their card information.

When a card is skimmed, its details can be stolen via the card’s magnetic strip. Then, information like the cardholder name, card number and expiration date can be copied and used in fraudulent ways. The stolen information can be used for identity theft, counterfeit cards, and some people will use it to make unauthorized purchases online or over the phone. Some skimmers even install a camera to steal information or use Bluetooth devices to steal credit or debit card information.

Walsh explains how you can avoid getting your information and money stolen, “Try not to use your pin ever if you have a credit option. Anyone using your pin through a skimming device automatically has access to your account. If you have the ability to tap your card, use that as well. It is less likely that your card information will be stolen using the tapping method.”

Most times these devices are stuck onto card readers with double sided tape so before making purchases or using the ATM, Capital recommends that people check to see if the card reader looks intact and not raised. Try to feel around the card reader to make sure it’s not loose. Check the security seal at gas pumps. Make sure the card slot and keypad look the same as others and just be aware.

If you see anything that does not look right on card reading systems, mention it to an employee, use another payment method or just go somewhere else.
