LUDLOW, Mass. (WWLP) – A lunch event was held Thursday at the Gremio Lusitano Club in Ludlow to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution.
The Carnation Revolution was a military coup against the dictator of Portugal, notable for being completed without the revolutionaries firing a single shot. It resulted in a series of reforms that saw Portugal become a thriving democracy, and the eventual end of Portuguese colonization.
State Senator Jake Oliveira, the first Portuguese-American elected to the State House from western Massachusetts, spoke at the event. 22News spoke with David Fernandes, the Vice President of Retail at the Polish National Credit Union, about why the institution helps put on the event.
“I think it’s great to get the community together, we look at the town of Ludlow with such a significant Portuguese culture, it’s exciting to have such a vibrant Portuguese town and to see the people come together at an event like this,” said Fernandes.
Fernandes said this second annual event, celebrating the events of April 25th, grew enough to necessitate a move to a larger venue, calling their expansion a “good problem.”
